Trying to get kids outside when its cold and windy while they are all comfy and cozy in front of the TV is no easy task. We know fresh air is good for us, even in the winter, but sometimes it’s just easier to stay where it’s nice and warm.

Give them a reason to go outside and maybe give them an extra nudge out the front door with your own snow pants securely fastened! Want your kids to love the outdoors, even in winter? Get outside yourself!

When my kids were old enough to walk and ride in a toboggan, I bought myself the warmest outdoor boots and snow pants I could find, knowing if I wanted my kids outside, I would need to be outside too!

We plan family activities outside every weekend. Ever gone for a winter hike? Nothing is more beautiful then the sun bouncing off the snow in the woods. The kids love finding treasures hidden in the snow and seeing how different everything looks without leaves.

Find an outdoor skating rink and lace up your own skates. Don’t know how to skate? Take lessons with your kids and show them adults can learn too! Rent some snowshoes, make up your own snow golf course, or have the kids take you for a toboggan ride!

If snow is sparse, lace up runners and go for a winter family jog, a bike ride or visit your favorite park. The swings are open year round! The best way to get kids outdoors in the winter is to head outside with them.

We underestimate what a powerful example we are to our children. My kids watch me put on layers and head out to the trails with my music ready to go for a winter run or bike ride. Just because it is cold, doesn’t mean we can’t still walk to school.

Even if you are not a fan of winter, a few extra layers and a bit of extra effort can turn even the coldest winter days into fun family time outside that keeps everyone active and healthy until the warmer temperatures return! Everyone can benefit for a little family fun in the fresh air.
